Hideous Combination Words

Hello Friends!

I know it’s a bit late but I’ve been busy celebrating lovely events with my dear friends.

So here it is – HAPPY THANKSGIVUKAH!

I’m not American or even in America but I have enough friends from the US that means that I’m relatively experienced in Thanksgiving.

This year we celebrated Thanksgiving with our international friends by eating a huge meal that including a particularly fruit pie and pumpkin pie. SO DELICIOUS.

But also, I teach at Hebrew School and we celebrated Chanukah with the kids this week. Love me some donuts.

I hope you’ve been enjoying the celebrations as well.

The Best

Hello friends!

Today was such a magical day.

My BFF and her delightful husband had a layover in HK for just half a day on their way to Japan. So naturally I took them out to the Wong Tai Sin temple for some cultural education. It was great and beautiful, even if there was a bit too much smoke from all the incense. And then, obviously, I took them out for a totally delicious vegetarian lunch at the Chi Lin Nunner. It’s great eating at a place full of Buddhist nuns/monks. Feels pretty authentic!

You know how some things just make you happy? Well, these two lovebirds make me terribly happy!

Frenchie

Hello friends!

I hope you are all having an exceptional weekend.

Mine’s been lovely. We were at friends of ours with a few other couples for Friday night dinner and then we went to Chabad HK for Saturday lunch.

Saturday night I caught up with some British friends of mine. One of whom I hadn’t seen for like 6 years! We got awesome vegetarian food from Mana. And then the night continued on to the LKF festival.

Phew!

But today has been cruisey. Gymming, cooking, prepping for the next week.

Oh and tonight my BFF and her hubby are popping into HK for one day on their way to JAPAN! I haven’t seen her for like 3 months. I’m so excited!

Perfect

In some ways today was a really average day.

I went to my internship. I did research. I gave advice. I learned from my mentor. I read my murder mystery during lunch at the park. I got a gingerbread latte (ok, well that was kinda exciting).

I came home to my boy who’d also just gotten home from a long day. We went to the gym. We went to the supermarket. Then he went home to start cooking and I went to the bakery to pick up some bread.

But then on the walk back from the bakery I was walking through the cobbled streets of the trendy neighbourhood of Shueng Wan. There were fairy lights in the trees, the weather was finally cool and crisp and there was even a jazz band playing on some steps with people mulling around enjoying the musical treat.

I felt like I was at last happy living in Hong Kong.

You know, living in a new place is never easy. Especially when it’s a totally new culture. And you are studying online so it’s hard to make new friends.

But today I loved living here. Today was perfect.

So I came home with my loaf of bread and sat down with my boy and we had delicious fish tacos.

Just perfect.

So thanks for reading my ramble. I hope you’ve all also just had a great day. And even if it wasn’t, know that tomorrow could be a great day.

Grown Up

Little old ladies in Hong Kong are bad-ass. They work hard all day and all night.

Hello friends!

Ok I have two things to say today.

1) This is a fancy outfit because I’m currently working for a fancy lawyer (well, it’s only a 2 week internship). Today we had a case in front of the Hong Kong court of appeal. It was about banking. Blerg.

But seriously, fancy work outfits are a struggle. I came to HK planning on being a student so I didn’t bring business attire, so these few weeks are going to be an experiment.

Plus, now I look like a grown up. Except for two things:

a) Today the lawyer I’m working for introduced me to another lawyer saying “she may only look 13, but she’s actually married!” Hahahaha. Not funny.

b) And I may have had a bit of a love bite on my neck on Monday morning. Definitely not professional! It took a lot of make-up to deal with that. Thanks Hubby. TMI?

2) These photos have made me realise how much weight I’ve gained in the past few months. I know it’s totally normal after you get married, particularly since I was pretty light for my wedding. Also, you know, like when you move overseas and there’s all this new delicious food to try? I’ve been pretty good at going to gym and running and stuff. But this has got to stop somewhere. It stops here. Any advice?

Kaiping, China

Hello friends!

I’m back!

The Boy and I just spent a lovely weekend in Kaiping, China.

It’s only 4 hours by bus from Hong Kong but it feels like a totally different world.

The main attraction in the area are these old mansions called Diaolous. They were built like 100 years ago by Chinese people who had gone to the West (like USA and Australia) made their fortunes then returned to China to live out their days in luxury. The mansions are built in a Western style. I think the Chinese find them more interesting because they look so foreign to them, but to The Boy and I they kinda just looked like standard buildings.

It was a really rural area. This woman is drying out rice that she grew with her family. Then they will take it to the local mill to have the husk taken off. Whatever they don’t need to feed themselves they will sell.

This is a ceiling in one of the mansions. So beautiful.

Ok, I guess that a shrine to the ancestors is a pretty non-Western addition to your home.

We found a star-fruit grove. Delicious.

Playing Mahjong.

The whole time we were there we didn’t see any other Westerners. We were so unique that when we stumbled across an outside concert on Saturday night, the singer welcomed us to China and the whole crowd applauded us while we bashfully waved.

In other news, today I started my 2 week internship with a local barrister (senior attorney) so expect to see some fancy business wear outfits soon.

So what’s been going on?

Below: I made kumquat (a small citrus fruit) and honey cake. Yummy.

Above: New favorite nail colour.

Below: Studying. But this week I finished my course for passing the bar! So close to being an actual lawyer!

Above: Been reading this book about being a journalist in Hong Kong in 1997 when the country transferred from being a British colony to being part of China. It was a good book, but probably a bit too long.

Below: A blogger friend asked to see the finished product of the Kippah I made for The Boy for our wedding. So here it is, I crocheted it freehand, I just make patterns as I go. I use a .75mm hook if you were wondering.

Above: Brunch at the local coffee shop. And yes, technically I live in China.

Macau

So here are some photos from my adventure in Macau. For those that were wondering, Macau is an island near Hong Kong that was a Portuguese colony for 400 years before returning to China in 1997. It’s main industry is gambling in their many casinos. They rake in more moolah than Las Vegas. Crazy. But you won’t see any photos of casinos here. I went for a wonder in the Taipa village to see traditional Portuguese architecture and Chinese temples/shrines. It was a nice break from the hustle and bustle of HK.
